Equally important, we also seek to develop insight about the factors that help many children succeed. The main goal of the project is to study the mechanisms of literacy acquisition in two alphabets (Arabic and Roman) and investigate the relationships between reading difficulties (dyslexia) in two very different languages (Arabic, English) that employ different alphabets (Arabic, Roman).

THE CENTER AND THE BENEFITS

The Fellow will join the BCBL (Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language - www.bcbl.eu). The Center promotes a rich research environment without teaching obligations. It provides access to the most advanced behavioral and neuroimaging techniques, including 3 Tesla MRI, a whole-head MEG system, four ERP labs, a NIRS lab, a baby lab including an eyetracker, two eyetracking labs, and several well-equipped behavioral labs.  There are excellent technical support staff and research personnel (PhD and postdoctoral students).

REQUIREMENTS

We are looking for cognitive neuroscientists or experimental psychologists with a background in Psycholinguistics, Linguistics, Psychology, or Cognitive Neuroscience, an excellent command of English and Arabic. Advanced skills in neuroimaging methods are desirable (not mandatory). We expect a strong interest for and motivation to work on the interplay of language, language disorders, bilingualism and multilingualism, the willingness to invest in interdisciplinary collaboration, and the ability to work in teams. Candidates should have a strong publication track record.

The goal of the Department of Neuropsychology is to identify the functional architecture of language and its neuroanatomical basis in the mature and the developing brain. We use several neuroscientific methods (e.g., structural and functional MRI, EEG, and MEG) on both healthy participants as well as subjects suffering from brain lesions.

The research is conducted at the MPI-CBS in Leipzig, Germany, an internationally leading center for cognitive and imaging neuroscience equipped with a 7.0 T MRI scanner, several 3.0 T MRI scanners, a 306-channels MEG system, TMS, tDCS, and several EEG systems. All facilities and data analysis are supported by experienced IT and physics staff. PhD students will have the opportunity to participate in an International Max-Planck Research School.

The candidate must hold a master's degree (or equivalent) in linguistics, neuroscience, psychology, or a related field. The candidate is expected to be a talented, enthusiastic, willing-to-learn researcher with a strong interest in language. The successful candidate will have a profound background in psycholinguistics, solid programming (i.e., MATLAB®) skills, and experience in acquisition and analysis of neuroscientific or behavioural data. The successful candidate's project will focus on the oscillatory brain networks underlying higher-level language comprehension (i.e., syntax and semantics).

Starting date for the position is February 1st, 2015. Salary is dependent on experience and based on MPI stipends or equivalent salary according to German public service regulations. The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer, and international applicants are encouraged.

The application should include the following documents (in a single PDF-file):

*           Cover letter describing personal qualifications and research interests

*           Curriculum vitae

*           Contact details of two personal references

Applications with the subject heading 'PhD 03-14' should be sent to: personal@cbs.mpg.de. The deadline for application submission is November 30th, 2014.

PhD Opening--Study of Cognitive Neuroscience of Bilingualism at the Montreal Neurological Institute

We are seeking a PhD student to work on a project related to our new Montreal Bilingual Brain Initiative. The student will work on the neural underpinnings of bilingualism using a range of brain imaging techniques, and will have the unique opportunity to work with our team (members from the Montreal Neurological Institute and also from the Centre for Research on Brain, Language, & Music at McGill University).

Interested students should email a CV and letter of interest to Dr. Denise Klein (denise.klein@mcgill.ca).
